STARBASE Instructor Recognized as Teacher of the Year

sc_sf_teacher_of_year.jpgSTARBASE Swampfox instructor, Lola "Sugarr" Banks was selected as the 2010 Teacher of the Year by the Columbia Chapter of the Air Force Association (AFA).  Each year the AFA recognizes a classroom teacher, in a public or private institution, who demonstrates accomplishments and achievements in exciting students about science and math - preparing them to use and contribute to tomorrow's technologies.  Banks' STARBASE call name is "Ms. Sugarr" prompting one of her students to write, "Ms Sugarr is the best of the best....don't let her name fool you, she has some spice."

Puerto Rico Celebrates 15 Years

pr_vip_copy.jpgSTARBASE Puerto Rico celebrated its 15th Anniversary with a special graduation ceremony on May 14th, 2010. The Adjutant General of Puerto Rico Antonio J. Vicens said, "Today on the Fifteenth Anniversary we are celebrating close to 17,000 students that have passed through this program.  I believe that what we are doing for our youth is going to help us in the long run and this is precisely a part of out community outreach program."

Senators Visit STARBASE Minnesota
mn_levin_and_dayton.jpgStudents from Frost Lake Elementary in St. Paul Minnesota shared their STARBASE experience with Senator Carl Levin (Michigan) and Gubernatorial Candidate Mark Dayton (a former member of the Senate and current STARBASE Minnesota Board Member). The visit to STARBASE was part of a June tour of the 133rd Airlift wing of the Minnesota Air Guard where STARBASE Minnesota is located.

DoD Releases STEM Education and Outreach Plan
ohio_atmosphere.jpgThe National Defense Education Act, signed into law in 1958, authorized DoD to, among other things, increase the flow of talent into science and engineering, fund enrollment in higher education, and enhance public understanding of science and technology.  The act came on the heels of the Soviet Union's launch of the Sputnik 1 satellite and the resulting commitment by the United States to regain dominance over its Cold War adversary in scientific and technological disciplines.

Brig Gen Greenlee Visits STARBASE Hawaii
h_k_bg_greenlee.jpgBrig Gen Ann Greenlee, Assistant Adjutant General, Hawaii Air National Guard, recently visited STARBASE Hawaii.  A long time member of the STARBASE Hawaii family, General Greenlee was impressed with the students of Haili Christian School as they built and launched their bottle rockets.

Lowcountry Students Graduate from STARBASE Program

Beaufort, SC (WTOC)

STARBASE students learn about the work of military Students from St. Gregory the Great and St. Peter's Catholic School spent the week at STARBASE on Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort.  They learned all about math, science and technology through hands-on experiments and projects.
