| KS STARBASE Launches Summer Learning |
|
By Jeff Garretson, KSALink.com
The 5-day course gives students projects that apply to daily life - plus a peek at military aircraft and ground vehicles as well. Miles Beckman, a 5th grader from Lindsborg, says sitting in the seat of a helicopter was thrilling. "The Black Hawk was amazing!" Each student worked on crafting their own rocket during the week and then turned a grassy field into a launch pad for family and friends to watch the rockets fly on Friday. Bobby Robinson of Salina said the event reminded him of his favorite patriotic day. "It was pretty cool - like fireworks on the 4th of July." Kansas STARBASE, Inc., a nonprofit corporation, operates the STARBASE program on behalf of the Kansas National Guard with locations in Salina, Wichita, Topeka, and Kansas City. Classes are offered throughout the year in Salina at the facility located at 2929 Scanlan Ave. According to the organization, since 1993, the program has helped more than 20,000 students apply the principles of math, science and technology to their daily lives. |
