STARBASE Graduates Receive National Recognition

Sen Tom Udall, Haley Hanson, Alana Kimmel, Jack Hanson, Jeff BingamanSTARBASE graduates Haley Hanson, Lana Kimmel, and Jack Hanson were honored at a reception sponsored by the Business and Industry STEM coalition in Washington, DC.  The coalition honored youth that had made an outstanding contribution in science, technology or engineering. All three students were graduates of STARBASE LaLuz in New Mexico. Senators Tom Udall and Jeff Bingaman  congratulated the students on their accomplishments in national competitions.

Haley and Jack Hanson, a brother and sister team from New Mexico, earned an earlier invitation from President Obama to participate in the White House Science Fair in October 2010.  They designed a survival game, using the Spore video program platform, which won first place in the Game Changers Kid Competition.  Haley wrote the script and text for the video game while Jack worked on developing the game's logic and designing creatures and scenery.

Lana Kimmel joined three teammates to enter the national Team American Rocketry Challenge.  The team successfully built and launched a rocket that carried an egg 750 feet and then delivered it safely back to Earth in 45 seconds!   Their successful launch and retrieval earned them fourth place. Her goal for next year is to win the TARC competition and compete in the international competition in England.
